I create smiles

30 09 2009

I had the best day ever yesterday at work.

It started horribly… it was after all the one year anniversary of my grandpa’s funeral… not a day I want to remember, so I was crying in the morning before work-no worries, it needed to be done and I’m better now, but I got caught up in memories, and then thought someone was mad at me and I had no idea why and all of that led to crying… but no worries… I went to work and my day magically became better.

I was in Superstar Loop again-which means… PARADE! The best part of my day is always the parade in that location. Yesterday a dad came up to us who were watching the parade, saying something about how his son was disappointed/grumpy/sad because he didn’t get to see Buzz Lightyear… or something to that effect-I didn’t get the whole story. But my manager, Lily, was there and heard the story, and decided she wanted to make this little kid’s day better… since there were so many of us standing to watch the parade, she looked at me and asked me to do a “magical moment” and to go to the back of the park to another one of our shops and get him a Buzz Lightyear stuffed toy, or better yet, a Buzz Lightyear Astro Blaster toy gun for the 7 year old. So I hurry to the back of the park, with the BIGGEST smile on my face ever in the history of smiles, telling myself… “I love my job, I love my JOB!” because that was seriously the coolest thing I ever got to do. So I pick out a Buzz Lightyear Astro Blaster gun for him, and hurry back to the parade route. I’ve meanwhile forgotten what the man looked like, but my co-worker, Luciana remembered, and together we went up to him, and gave his son the gun for free, and told him that Buzz Lightyear asked us to give it to him because he wanted him to have it extra special, and to show it to Buzz as he went past in the parade. Now, this kid who had been soooo angry to be at the parade now has the biggest smile on his face. His parents are smiling like crazy too and thanking us… best thing ever! We go back to watch the parade and dance along, and Luciana and I are crying because we just created magic.

And that is why I love my job!

THEN!!! I’m doing “Alicia solo time” which I do after the parade when the song “Celebrate You” by Corbin Bleu comes on, when I dance and sing along, and this man comes up to me and decides he wants to dance along with me… so on the spot I had to create a dance that he totally followed along! it was awesome, and he gave me several high fives… so much fun!

Then later in the day when it got dark, I helped a lost child, Brianna, reunite with her mom, she was so brave, I was so proud of her!

You can’t get awesome days like that anywhere else… you really can’t… best. job. ever!

Magical Moments

22 09 2009

I’ve had some pretty awesome days the past few days at work. Before I forget them, I wanted to write them down, and share them with others, so we can all bask in the awesomeness that is my life for a minute… bear with me… haha

So I saw Mitchel Musso from Hannah Montana at my park last Friday, the 18th of September, he was there for a cd signing, and beforehand he was wandering around the park doing rides and stuff… and that’s when I saw him, and freaked out a little bit… not over the top freaking out… but more like silently going: “omg, there’s Mitchel Musso! I’m within 5 feet of a famous person, omg!”

then meeting guests who are also from Nebraska, or are wearing Husker clothing, will always make my day. The last couple from Nebraska, worked at the University, and I had a really nice, long talk with them, which was awesome. I always try to be extra friendly to Nebraska folk, as I don’t see them too often.

Another of my absolute favorite things to do is when I’m working the Superstar Loop, because then I get to see the parade, or at least part of it. As cast members, we like to watch the parade together, and have a nice little dance party to the music, which is always fun.
Today, after the parade as it is going past where the cart/truck I’m working at, one of the green army men, the emcee’s of the parade sees me dancing and singing to the parade music and actually called out my name and said thank you to me… totally made my day right there to get acknowledged for dancing around like an idiot… that’s always fun.

After the parade is completely over and backstage, they always play “Celebrate You” by Corbin Bleu, which I ALWAYS love to sing and dance along to, because that’s the best part of my day- singing to no one in particular at the top of my lungs and dancing around… well, as I’m doing this, one of the parade control cast members is walking back to where he works when there isn’t a parade on… and seriously started popping and locking/break dancing along with my singing to Celebrate You, it was SO AWESOME! Plus, of course it helped that he was GORGEOUS! haha. Then after the song ended, everyone that saw was clapping for the two of us… it was great!

It’s days like today where I really, truly love my job… I have the best job in the world, making people smile… what could be better than that? I can’t think of anything. 🙂

“It’s the time of your life, you don’t want to miss out on right here and now, there’s so many reasons why, you don’t wanna stop, it’s your chance live it up, in everything you do… CELEBRATE YOU!”

Alicia, Carter, Nick, Adam and Jenny at Epcot! The first official meeting of the posse!

Alicia, Carter, Nick, Adam and Jenny at Epcot! The first official meeting of the posse!

I’m here in the most magical place in the world, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida! I’ve been here for 18 days now, and it feels like it’s been a whole lot longer!

I work in the backlot merchandise area of Disney’s Hollywood Studios (formerly Disney MGM Studios). I must say that I absolutely love my job. I’m not a huge fan of the hours that I work (this week I work 46+ hours, next week I’ll work more than 56 hours), but yet, I still love my job.

I suppose that most of it is that I’d much rather be here than back at school like my the rest of my friends and little brother are back in Nebraska. There is SO much more to do here than there ever was back in Nebraska, which of course was to be expected, this is a vacationer’s mecca after all, whereas Nebraska most definitely is NOT! haha.

I suppose since I haven’t blogged or vlogged in awhile, I’ll let you know what has been going on the past 18 days.

Day 1, I checked in at Vista Way shortly before 9 in the morning, and got assigned to a 3 bedroom apartment in Patterson Court. I moved in all my stuff, and then went to Casting, where they checked me for the “Disney Look”, and I got my job assignment, and they gave me a LOT of papers and things to read, and then did the background check, and lots of other boring things like that.

Then I had a housing meeting which was also pretty boring, as they told us what not to do so we don’t get fired which is called “terminated”/”termed” here.

Day 2, I didn’t have anything scheduled for that day, I did most of my unpacking then.

Day 3 was Traditions, the 4-hour long class that every new employee of Disney takes before they can work. This was also where we got our name badges and i.d. cards… the i.d. cards are basically our ticket to the world, so after class, I went out with one of my roommates to DHS (studios), and we played in the parks all day, because we finally could, for free!!! 🙂 Then we met up with the rest of our roommates at Magic Kingdom later that night for the Spectromagic parade, and Wishes, the fireworks show.

Day 4 was my first day at work, another “class” where they gave us a tour of our location… meaning I got a tour of Hollywood Studios. Then there was also a pool party at Vista that night with the Toy Story characters.

Day 5 was my first day in my area with a trainer, Sherri, who was nuts, but awesome.

Day 6 was my “Merchantainment” class at Disney University where we finally learned how to work the registers.

Day 7 and 8 were more specialty training, this time with Luciane.

Day 9 was training at “Writer’s Stop” the specialty shop in my location, where we learned how to make the coffee drinks that are sold there.

In between all of that, I finally met my new best friend, Jenny, in person after talking with her online for MONTHS. We’ve hung out with the parks, and met all kinds of awesome new people to add to our “posse”. There are so many people in our posse, I couldn’t possibly name them all, but the most important ones are: Jenny, myself, Carter, Adam, Nick, Stefanie, and I’m not even sure I’ve met the rest of them, as we keep adding to it. I’ve also met more fellow youtube video bloggers, Joey and Evan, and briefly Matt of Lauren and Matt.

and in between all of the awesome friends I’ve found, I work like crazy. 46+ hours last week, 46+ hours this week, and more than 56+ hours next week. But if I didn’t love my job, I might be a bit more upset about it. Either way, my paychecks pretty much rock, even if I only get one day off a week, and don’t get to see my friends as much as I would like.

I also thought I should start a list of my pixie dust, aka, things to think about to make myself happy when guests make me unhappy… cause you really can’t be unhappy here.

so here it is… my Pixie Dust list:

my cats, Toby, Shadow and Maddie

Josh Groban

my other favorite music

the fact that I’m in Disney World

Carter…. 🙂

Husker Football, even if I won’t get to see any games this year

that’s all I can think of for now…

and now I need to think about starting to get ready for work, so I will see you all real soon!

Countdown to Disney Vlog #3

29 06 2009

forgot to post this earlier this week when it came out on youtube…

so here it is, Countdown to Disney Vlog #3!

Countdown to Disney, Vlog 2!

14 06 2009

So I had a really crazy week at work.

It all started last Saturday, the first day I was officially on the schedule, and I completely screwed up transferring my schedule from one calendar to another, and missed the day of work and had left town with my mom to go shopping. They called me, and were like, “did you know you were supposed to be in to work today” and I’m like no… and I can’t work, I’m out of town. So I had to take a point and call in to report my absence and basically beat myself up for it all day.

Then Monday comes, the next day I was scheduled to work. It’s all going great and dandy until they put me on the cigarette lane, my least favorite place to work, but it’s fine and I can handle it… Until this INSANE crazy old man comes through my line. He pays for his items with a check, and where I work, you run the check through the machine, which then voids the check which you then hand back to the customer. Well… he didn’t like that I gave him his check back. And proceeded to curse at me, calling me a crook, and saying “to hell if I come back and shop here again” and more nonsense like that. Let’s just say it was pretty funny… after he was out of earshot! I was as nice and sweet as I possibly could have been, it’s not my fault he was an idiot!

Okay… so then Tuesday, I’m not really scheduled to be working, according to the paper schedule in the back, so I had a dentist appointment to get some cavities filled (one on my wisdom tooth, ouch!). Shortly before I was supposed to leave to go to the dentist, someone calls from work. “Did you know you were scheduled to work today?” uh… no. I wasn’t! Apparently some weird glitch said that on the computer and on the schedule of cashiers, my name appeared as scheduled, but on the paper schedule, my name was not scheduled. So I went to the dentist, then went to work with half of my mouth numb from the Novocaine. I explained that I wasn’t scheduled on the paper schedule, and luckily management told me I didn’t need to work, so I left.

Wednesday… considerably better day. I had the two sweetest old ladies in the world come through my line, who complimented me on my efficiency and my sacking abilities, and had a great conversation with them as well about Disney and my last name, and then they told my manager… I will always love sweet old ladies over crazy old men any day!

Thursday, again the paper schedule and computer were off. The paper schedule had me working, but the computer didn’t, but my manager told me to work what the paper said, so I came in to work. Had to be clocked in by a manager, and it was an early shift (7-3, yuck!), but otherwise, uneventful.

Friday, another early shift 7-3, but this was very uneventful… just did some computer based learning things at work (aka CBLs), so that ate up some of the time.

then yesterday, was a very long day, 9:30-6:30… but that’s okay with me. but it’s also why I might look a bit tired in my latest VIDEO BLOG!

I was tagged by Jenny to do a 5 facts vlog, so that’s what that is. You can see her videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/jennydaws

I also included this link in my sidebar, so if you want to see that, it’s here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/neonkittens143/

Oh, and I forgot to talk about it in this vlog, mostly because I ran out of time, but I also got an email from Disney this week talking about the Disney Look. So maybe if I have more time, I’ll post some of that here later.

But, until next time… See ya real soon! 58 days until Disney! (okay it’s 57 by the time I’m posting this… but still! :))

Disney vlog!

5 06 2009

65 days until my first day of work at Walt Disney World in Florida!!!! 🙂

Can you tell that I’m excited?

I was so excited, and bored, today that I decided to record a video blog, also known as a vlog!

Since I’ve decided that this will also serve as my official Disney blog, I’m gonna post it here too, and hope it works out the way I think it will. Bare with me on my trial run of my first vlog!

Anyway, what to expect if you don’t want to watch it, or don’t plan on watching it. I introduce myself,  and play a bit of the Carter Twins’ song “Photobooth,” I tell you the big news of my graduation from UNL, show off my degree, show you the infamous purple folder of acceptance from the Disney College Program, tell you when I’m going and for how long, and let you know what will come next. Watch it, won’t ya please? I’d love ratings and comments too, but they’re totally not necessary!

See ya real soon!
